Atonement :: Ian McEwan

Genre: Fiction
Year: 2001

I have to say that I enjoyed this book, even thuogh I was reluctant to do so. I was glad that I had to do an assignement on this one, because I finished it in record time. This is usually a good sign for me, especially since it meant that I had enough time ti go through the important bits again. Atonement made me think - especially about the act of writing, and the need to write. What motivates the writer? It was close to home in some places.

This is the first McEwan novel I've read, I'm ashamed to say, but I think that I shall pick up a couple of his other ones now, on the merit of this one.

Atonement is the story of this girl, Briony Tallis, who does something very impulsive and ends up hurting her sister and her intended. At the end of the novel (if you don't want a spoiler, stop reading here) the reader finds out that the novel has been written by Briony as a form of atonement for what she did when she was thirteen. Of course, certain things in this last chapter call into question the accuracy of her story, and make us question whether she altered the facts - and if so, why she altered the facts. There are scenes where I cringe for what Briony does and I'm sure that anyone else will too. Very finely written and engaging.
